“Goes on Everything!” Green Tahini Sauce! I had pondered for a while for this title. Its a lil mouthful isn’t it? But so is this sauce….or call it a spread …. or you can even thin it out and use it as a creamy dressing or may be just grab a bag of chips and dip your heart out! It’s THAT good and versatile.
ENTER my “goes on everything” Green Tahini Sauce!
For every Indian household cilantro chutney is almost an everyday staple! We devourer that stuff like its some sort of crack haha, we dip our pakoras and samosas in it or spread it on sandwiches or just have it to accompany a huge meal. And this sauce is very similar to that but tastes entirely different due the secret ingredient ….. Well not so much of a secret but … its TAHINI !
Tahini or tahina is a condiment made from toasted ground hulled sesame seeds, widely popular in Middle Eastern cuisines as well as in Eastern Mediterranean regions and some parts of North Africa. It is often a major ingredient in hummus, baba ghanoush etc.
Well I am not sure if somebody else have tried to make the very same sauce or not but in my defense I came by it very accidentally while making Green Cilantro Chutney, quite a few years ago. I suddenly thought to add heaping tablespoon of tahini to the green chutney I was making and viola! There it was, the most creamiest, slightly spicy, lil bit nutty and fresh vibrant green sauce-spread-chutney!
I spread this Green Tahini sauce on all kinds of wraps, burgers and on sandwiches. This as spread works so well, it provides enough creaminess and punch without being overwhelming. I even use it as my go-to salad dressing because I always have this on hand. I would thin it out with more lemon juice and olive oil and just drizzle on salads. I often mix it in with cooked couscous or quinoa and you have a herbed version of the same, throw in some cucumber, cherry tomatoes, olives etc. and you have yourself a great healthy bowl of lunch or dinner. I even recently started dipping my pita chips and crackers in it and it serves as a quick and yummy snack option!
And did I even mention that its super easy to make, healthy and very low fat ?!! WIN WIN!
The possibilities with this one are endless and I hope you will try it and love it as much as we do! Follow the recipe card below –
- 1 bunch cilantro, washed well and roughly chopped ( including stems )
- 2-4 medium spiced green chilies, chopped in half ( I used about 4 long mild chilies, Thai green chilies are more spicier, use 1-2 or 1 medium size jalapeño )
- 3 tablespoon lemon juice ( 1 medium sized )
- 3 tablespoon tahini
- ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- Gather all the ingredients and put everything in a blender and blend until smooth and spreadable consistency. Scrape the sides of the blender in between to help everything blend well.
- Taste test and adjust salt and pepper if needed.
- If you would like it thinner add more olive oil or water in tablespoon increments.
- Transfer it an airtight glass container and store it in the fridge for uptown a week.
- Enjoy it as a spread on burgers, wraps and sandwiches. Thin it out more and use it as a dressing on salads or use as a dipping sauce.
If your sauce tastes more on bitter side, you may have added more tahini, add more lemon juice and it should be fine.
